In today's fast-paced world, it is easier than ever to grab a quick and easy meal from a supermarket. However, what many people don't realize is that these convenience foods are often packed with unhealthy levels of salt and sugar.

A recent study by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) found that nearly half of all packaged foods sold in Indian supermarkets contain excessive levels of salt. The study also found that one-third of these foods contain more sugar than the recommended daily intake.

These high levels of salt and sugar can have a number of negative health consequences, including obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that over 1.7 million deaths worldwide each year are linked to the consumption of processed foods.

In addition to the health risks, processed foods can also be expensive. A study by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) found that the average Indian household spends over Rs. 10,000 per year on processed foods. This is a significant amount of money that could be better spent on healthier options.

So, what can you do to avoid the unhealthy and expensive processed foods that are sold in Indian supermarkets? Here are a few tips:

  • Cook more meals at home. This is the best way to control the ingredients that go into your food.

  • Read food labels carefully. Pay attention to the amount of salt, sugar, and other unhealthy ingredients that are in each product.

  • Choose fresh fruits and vegetables over processed snacks. Fruits and vegetables are naturally low in salt and sugar, and they are packed with nutrients that are essential for good health.

  • Limit your intake of processed foods. If you do eat processed foods, make sure to do so in moderation.

By following these tips, you can help to reduce your intake of unhealthy salt and sugar, and improve your overall health.

Remember the Good Old Days?

I remember when I was a kid, my grandmother would make all of our snacks at home. She would make fresh fruit juices, healthy cookies, and even her own version of potato chips. These snacks were always delicious and nutritious, and they never contained any added salt or sugar.

More importantly these snacks were not only healthier, but they were also more delicious. So next time you're at the supermarket, think twice before buying those unhealthy processed snacks. Instead, try making your own snacks at home. Your body will thank you for it.
